Democratizing Broadband through “V-band” Spectrum
Facebook's Terragraph project is a 60 GHz, multi-node wireless system intended to deliver high-speed wireless internet connectivity. Terragraph is optimized for high-volume, low-cost production because it employs commercial off-the-shelf components and off-loads intensive data processing to the cloud.
60 GHz spectrum can deliver low cost gigabit data rates. It supports at least 7 GHz of bandwidth today, with the potential for use of 14 GHz in the future with an ability to deliver multi gigabit throughput to users accessing the system. By leveraging this part of the spectrum, existing or new operators can deliver at lower costs high-speed services to dense urban areas or rural communities without laying traditional fiber infrastructure.
Delivering a Reference Design and Terragraph-certified Commercial Solution
As part of Intel’s commitment and leadership in wireless infrastructure toward 5G, we worked with Facebook to define an Intel based solution for Terragraph. We also collaborated with RADWIN to deliver a solution reference design supporting 60 GHz multi-node wireless mesh network leveraging Terragraph technologies.
The new 60GHz self-organizing wireless mesh solution will be Terragraph-certified to enable a standardized and interoperable ecosystem at 60GHz. The solution will help address the need to deliver gigabit broadband wirelessly complementing metro fiber. We are also collaborating with Facebook and other industry leaders to contribute the Terragraph specification to the IEEE 802.11ay standard.
Service providers can use this new solution to support the rapid and cost-effective deployment of ultra-broadband wireless networks and 5G services to a variety of enterprises, residential buildings, rural areas, and underserved or difficult-to-serve locations. As an example, RADWIN plans to use its 60GHz and sub-6GHz portfolio to deliver various broadband services - including the delivery of 1Gbps to the home.
The 60 GHz solution will be available for early trials from RADWIN later this year. We expect general availability of a host of Intel architecture based solutions designed for Terragraph starting in 2019.
Intel Fuels Digital Transformation, 5G Future
We are proud to support the underlying architecture that will drive digital transformation across the network, cloud and client. Each of these have a critical role to deliver the speed, latency, and capacity required to realize the potential of 5G. The collaboration with Facebook and RADWIN is another example of how Intel enables this transformation and equips the network ecosystem to achieve aspirational results.
