Intel’s vision for 5G and the Network Edge
I had the pleasure to spend some time with Intel senior vice president and Network Platforms Group general manager, Sandra Rivera, to discuss Intel’s recent 5G achievement at the Winter Olympics and discuss how cloud frameworks will transform how computing is delivered from Hyperscale data centers to the network edge. I also spent some time with Renu Navale, Senior Director of Network Cloud and Industry Enabling, Network Platforms Group, Intel Corp, about her view of the edge and what she calls “views of different parts of the same elephant” across access, mobile edge, and network edge, and how Intel is working with ecosystem leaders and operators to drive the infrastructure required to deliver cloud scale and economics to edge environments.
Leading Industry Collaborations
To showcase the breadth of industry innovation on display in Barcelona, I continued my discussions with industry leaders on their featured advancements at the show. Dell EMC and Affirmed Networks discussed their collaboration for the delivery of what they tout as the industry’s first 5G mobile core, already in trial. In what is a terrific testament to ecosystem collaboration, Dell EMC used early access to Intel Xeon Scalable Processor based systems in their 14G servers coupled with Affirmed Networks software innovation to achieve 100/150Gbps throughput on a single Intel Xeon Scalable Platinum processor based solution.
The topic of security for 5G networks is a growing operator focus, and I was able to chat with Gemalto about how their security solutions address the unique requirements for 5G environments. In increasingly virtualized data and voice communication networks, Gemalto is a cybersecurity solution that integrates Intel® Software Guard Extensions trusted enclaves, a secure software-protected area of execution in memory, with Gemalto’s advanced security software services to create a robust processor-level security solution for virtualized networks.
VNF onboarding is critical to advance the breadth of ecosystem innovation for network transformation. I spoke with VMware about its expanded collaboration with Intel to enable cloud-optimized, 5G-ready networks with high performance, efficiency and security. A key feature of this collaboration is the focus on streamlining the VNF onboarding process for service providers through development of a set of common methodologies.
