Edge Computing – A Distributed Telco Cloud

Edge Computing brings the network closer to the network endpoint. It presents a unique opportunity for Communication Service Providers (CSP) to meet the demands of low latency applications, as well as optimally manage traffic of bandwidth hungry applications like VR and Video. With Edge Computing, CSPs to effectively monetize latency and location. To do so, CSPs need to build a Distributed Telco Cloud that allows dynamic workload placement based on the application's requirements. For Edge Computing to be successful, CSPs must make it easy for 3rd parties to host their applications – Application Onboarding, Orchestration, APIs need to be standardized to achieve scale for Edge Computing. The presentation will share further details on these.

Tech Talk: DPDK Membership Library

In this talk we will present the new DPDK Membership Library, this library is used to create what we call a “set-summary” which is a new data structure that is used to summarize large set of elements. It is the generalization and extension to the traditional filter structure, e.g. bloom filter, cuckoo filter, etc to efficiently test if a key belongs to a large set. There are two advantages of using such a set-summary rather than operating on a "full-blown" complete set of elements: First, it has a much smaller storage requirement than storing the whole list of elements themselves, and secondly checking an element membership (or other operations) in this set-summary is much faster than checking it for the original full-blown complete list of elements.

A Set-summary is a fundamental data aggregation component that can be used in many network (and other) applications. It is a crucial structure to address performance and scalability issues of diverse network applications including overlay networks, data-centric networks, flow table summaries, network statistics, traffic monitoring and many other applications.

In this talk we will present the new library fundamentals, describe the library API and highlight some of its usages. Furthermore, We will present our PoC experimental results of applying this library to improve flow classification for OpenvSwitch (OvS) to achieve 2X-3X better throughput.
