Intel® Network Builders University is celebrating the first anniversary of its launch this month. Just one year in, the program has over 60 available courses across nine programs with new courses being added each month. At this milestone, we encourage you to explore the university to improve your skills across a variety of topics.
The first program content in the Spanish language is releasing this month. These are translations of currently available courses in the university. If you or someone you know is a Spanish speaker, please check out the translated material here. The following courses are offered in Spanish:
- NFV & SDN Essentials Series (6 courses)
- SDI Vision (1 course)
- Network Transformation (1 course)
- vE-CPE Solution Program (4 Courses)
In addition to the translated material, there are three new DPDK courses covering a variety of new topics.
- Vector Packet Processing (VPP) – This new course provides guidance on how to build and install VPP.
- Testing DPDK – Learn to test DPDK features and performance with TestPMD.
- DPDK in a Box – Find out what DPDK in a box is and how it can help you as a developer.
Members of the Intel® Builders programs have access to these new courses and all Intel® Builders University training material. To access the material, simply log in to the member portal with existing Intel Builders program credentials and click on the University tab. Just before Mobile World Congress, Intel disclosed the new Intel® Atom® processor C3000 series as part of a broader announcement of new products supporting the development of a 5G-ready network. The new Intel Atom processors are low-power systems on chips (SoCs) that can bring intelligent processing in a small footprint to the edge of the network. These SoCs offer OEM customers tremendous performance/power choices—from 2- to 16-core versions, and from 8.5 W to 32 W versions. These performance choices offer a lot of processing power and throughput for network, storage, and IoT devices.
In addition, the Intel Atom processor C3000 series offers the Intel® QuickAssist Technology for up to 20 Gbps encryption and compression throughput—an upgrade from the previous generation of the Intel Atom processor C2000 family, which offered encryption technology, but no compression. Using the Intel QuickAssist Technology gives algorithm acceleration where workloads need a high level of encryption for applications, like 5G base stations that reside at the edge of the network.
Since the Intel Atom processor C3000 is an SoC, traditional IO functions that are found in chipsets are directly integrated into the processor. For networking applications, there are four integrated 10 Gb Ethernet ports that can also be configured as 1 Gb Ethernet ports for lower bandwidth applications. For storage applications, there are 16 SATA 3.0 ports, which makes this SoC ideally suited for cold-storage applications. And since the lowest-power version operates at 8.5 TDP, it can be designed into form factors that have only passive heat dissipation technology.
Another important improvement over the Intel Atom processor C2000 product family is that the current version supports Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (Intel® VT-d), which gives programmers the flexibility to get the performance of multiple virtualized applications running on the same hardware. For emerging applications such as micro customer premises equipment (uCPE), this capability offers network operators a tremendous amount of flexibility in deploying new virtualized network functions that then are bundled into customer-specific network services—in a "pay as you go" business model.
These processors are sampling now, with production availability in mid-2017. Many Intel® Network Builders are developing OEM and ODM solutions based on these processors, which you can check out in the coming months.

A big question in the transition to NFV systems is whether the new systems can perform at the same level as the dedicated appliances they replace. This test report documents the performance obtained by running the router functionality of the Brocade* 5600 vRouter in a virtual environment on a dual-socket Intel® Xeon® processor–based server. The parameters used (number of routes, next hops) as well as the traffic pattern are fully described in this document.
Many papers characterizing virtual network functions (VNF) performance use only one socket of a dual-socket commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) server. In some cases, both sockets are used independently by two VNFs. This document shows how a Brocade* 5600 vRouter can be used on a dual-socket commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) server, in cross-socket full-mesh traffic configurations. It highlights the impact of non-uniform memory access (NUMA) on the performance of VNF applications, using a Brocade vRouter. It shows the importance of a NUMA-aware QEMU and the influence of QPI.
This article presents a high-level overview of Open vSwitch* with the Data Plane Development Kit (OvS-DPDK)—the high performance, open source virtual switch—and links to further technical articles that dive deeper into individual OvS-DPDK features. This article was written for users of OvS who want to know more about DPDK integration.
This article is primarily aimed at development engineers working on high-performance computing applications. We will show an example of how we used Intel® VTune™ Amplifier to detect a performance bottleneck in Open vSwitch* (OvS) with Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK). We will also describe how we addressed this performance issue.
This series provides a simple overview of the Data Plane Development Kit, demonstrates the steps to run Open vSwitch with DPDK, how to run a TestPMD application, and the tools and ways to trace packets' statistics that are forwarded in OvS-DPDK.
NFV/SDN Concepts and Overview of ONOS*
This event is the first Meetup for Out of the Box Network Developers Portland! It will include time for networking followed by overviews of NFV, SDN, and Open Network Operating System (ONOS). Enabling Virtualization in SDN and NFV World on Intel® Architecture
This event is the first Meetup for Out of the Box Network Developers Ireland!
Networking has been traditionally entrusted to customized ASICs and vertically integrated software solutions on top of these customized boxes. Virtualizing network functions on industry-standard, high-volume servers based on Intel® architecture brings its own challenges. This meet up will focus on giving the attendee a flavor of some of the tools and technologies being developed by the industry and Intel to resolve some of these issues.
