In pursuit of enabling new business models and best leveraging IT resources, customers are constantly evolving their architectures to better meet business needs. The binary choice of on-premises computing or of shipping data and workloads to hyperscale cloud data centers is increasingly becoming a limiter. As a result, one area of intense focus of such innovation is on “edge computing.”
Edge computing is the placement of data center or network-class compute and storage resources away from centralized hubs and closer to the endpoint devices in order to improve service capabilities, optimize TCO, comply with data locality requirements, and reduce application latency. To meet this need, an ecosystem of providers is evolving solutions to allow deployment of data, workloads, and resources dynamically across on-premises, local cloud, or remote hyperscale infrastructures in a manner that best meets evolving business needs.
