With MWC formally kicking off today, Intel continued its discussion of 5G delivery. Intel vice president, 5G Communications Infrastructure Division general manager, Caroline Chan hosted a world-class keynote panel with representatives from La Liga, FC Barcelona, MediaPro, Nokia and Intel Sports. Sports are global business, so it was appropriate to have innovative business and technology innovators talk about transforming the sports and entertainment experience from the 100,000 fans in Camp Nou stadium to the 350 million FC Barcelona fans who follow the team from around the world. 5G applications are on the pitch at La Liga, embedded in FC Barcelona matches and center stage at MWC.
Democratizing Broadband through “V-band” Spectrum: Intel, Facebook and Radwin Collaboration
Today also brought news of Intel’s collaboration with Facebook to define an Intel architecture based solution for Facebook’s Terragraph project to deliver high-speed wireless internet connectivity to underserved communities. Intel also unveiled a collaboration with RADWIN that utilizes this configuration to deliver a solution reference design supporting 60 GHz multi-node wireless mesh network leveraging Terragraph technologies.
Because the 60 GHz spectrum can deliver low cost gigabit data rates, the solution will help address the need to deliver gigabit broadband wirelessly complementing metro fiber. Service providers can use this new solution to support the rapid and cost-effective deployment of ultra-broadband wireless networks and 5G services in urban areas and those that are underserved or difficult-to-serve.
Intel Select Solutions Advancements
It was fantastic to see Lenovo and Quanta demonstrations of their commercially available Intel Select Solutions for NFVI announced at MWC. These solutions will help accelerate time to deployment for critical NFVI implementations while providing an Intel-verified configuration that takes advantage of underlying Intel architecture based platform optimizations. We also saw momentum for Intel Select Solutions for NFVI grow today with Advantech, HPE and Nokia also announcing intent to deliver similar solutions in 2018.
And this was only day one of MWC! I encourage you to visit the Intel booth at Mobile World Congress, Hall 3 Stand 3E31 to check out the latest on our 5G and network transformation innovations and a whole lot more. Check back tomorrow for more updates from Barcelona.
