Cloud RAN architecture supports Verizon’s 4G, 5G and IoT services
Intel and Nokia announced a strategic collaboration today to deliver mobile infrastructure innovation for leading global operators including Verizon. The companies announced a new Cloud RAN architecture to support the communication service provider’s requirements for 4G, 5G and IoT.
Verizon's vRAN 1.0 architecture uses its existing edge cloud infrastructure with Nokia AirScale Cloud Base Station Server, featuring the Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor family. The company conducted a successful trial of Cloud RAN in Oklahoma City, which allows the partners to move ahead with Verizon to develop its new vRAN 2.0 architecture, adding cloud computing capabilities that maximize efficiencies in preparation for the diverse demands of IoT and the 5G future. Intel Supports New Multi-Vendor Open vRAN Ecosystem Initiative with Cisco
Cisco announced a new program with a number of ecosystem partners, including Intel, to deliver a reference architecture for Open vRAN. The partners will build solutions on an open and modular architecture enabling more rapid innovation to technology from ecosystem participants including radio providers and hardware and software solution providers. The project seeks to simplify the transition to Open vRAN and software-defined mobile networks and has laid out an aggressive target on ecosystem development.
China Unicom Launches Edge Cloud Trials in 15 Chinese provinces, cities
China Unicom, ZTE and Intel announced large-scale edge cloud field trials and pre-commercial deployments in 15 Chinese provinces and cities, including campus, stadiums, parks, IIoT and IoV scenarios. To fuel the field trials, China Unicom has built an edge-cloud testbed in Tianjin Jingjin with the help of Intel, Tencent Video, ZTE and other partners. The Edge-Cloud service platform is built on services using Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, along with DPDK, SR-IOV and other optimization technologies. Those at MWC can see the building and validating of edge vCDN, edge transcoding and edge intelligence analysis services in the Intel’s Booth (Hall 3 Stand 3E31).
