This paper describes how Intel has demonstrated optimization of a virtualized cable modem termination system (vCMTS) architecture using Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions 512, Intel® AES New Instructions, DPDK, and Intel® QuickAssist Technology on an Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor platform. A reference vCMTS downstream data-plane was implemented based on DPDK and extensive benchmarking was performed on an Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor platform with application instances running in Docker Containers. The paper describes the DPDK-based implementation as well as the benchmarking environment and contains detailed benchmark data with thorough analysis by Intel engineers.
